Stronger Bones, Stronger You: Managing Your Bone Health

Invest in your future mobility and well-being.

Learn how to maintain strong bones at any age.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a medical condition when bones become weak and brittle. Osteoporotic bones are not as dense or strong as healthy bones. People with osteoporosis are more likely to experience fragility fractures.

More About Fragility Fractures & Osteoporosis

The most common areas for fragility fractures are the spine, wrist, hip, and shoulder. There are many causes of osteoporosis, such as lack of calcium and vitamin D in your diet, kidney disease, certain medications, smoking and more.

Risk Factors for Bone Loss

  • Prior fragility fractures
  • Age 50 or older
  • Diabetes
  • Diets low in calcium and vitamin D
  • Early menopause
  • Certain medications (long-term steroid use)
  • Smoking
  • Excessive Alcohol Use
  • Weight loss surgery
  • Kidney disease
  • Family history of osteoporosis

Why Bone Health Matters

Fragility fractures are 3 times more common than heart attacks! This is a massive and underrecognized public health issue. Fragility fractures affect more than 2 million people over the age of 50 in the U.S. each year and less than 20% of these people receive appropriate evaluation and treatment for osteoporosis. At the ROC Bone Health Clinic, Dr. Kafchinski evaluates the underlying cause of osteoporosis and provides education and treatments to minimize future bone loss to reduce the risk of additional fractures.

Prevention for Fragile Bones and Fragility Fractures

Talk to your doctor about making sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D through healthy eating and vitamin supplements. Maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. Practice weight-bearing exercises, such as walking and resistance training or weightlifting that help to build stronger bones. Ensure a safe living environment that is free of tripping hazards.
