Ankle Instability

Ankle instability is a feeling of recurrent giving away of an ankle. This can occur on any surface but is typically worse on uneven ground. Ankle instability may result from an ankle sprain which did not heal properly or was not rehabilitated correctly or from an ankle fracture which was not treated properly. This is why it is important to be seen for ankle sprains and treated properly.

Symptoms of Ankle Instability

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Feeling you will constantly twist your ankle

Ankle Instability Diagnosis

An ankle instability diagnosis typically involves your medical history, physical examination and imaging tests.

  • X-rays will be taken to look for any bony abnormalities
  • Physician will exam the ankle for swelling and areas of pain
  • Tests for instability will also be performed known as anterior drawer and talar tilt exam
  • Questions will be asked about history of ankle injuries

Ankle Instability Treatment Options

  • Non operative treatment includes using an ankle brace if needed and physical therapy. Anti-inflammatories may be prescribed for pain and swelling. An ankle injection may be offered for pain and swelling as well.
  • Surgical treatment may be offered if not responsive to non operative treatments. An MRI will be ordered to evaluate the ankle joint as well as the ligaments on the outside and inside of the ankle for surgical planning. The surgeon will discuss with you the operative measures needed to help stabilize the ankle.
